Election Observation Missions

What is an EOM?

Election Observation Missions (EOMs) are at the core of our activities. We organise EOMs to support democratic institutions and organizations. On an EOM the main task is to observe the polling stations on Election Day and note signs of problematic procedures, unrest or fraudulent behaviour.

Due to our many years of experience, we have built a comprehensive election observation methodology, which helps us do our job as international observers in the most professional manner.

The program of our EOMs also includes lectures about the history and culture, and talks on the political climate, institutions and electoral system of the country we are in. It is an educational programme that combines socialisation as a ground for learning and sharing.

Our extensive experience in conducting EOM's will guarantee you a great and meaningful trip which will improve your curriculum.

Practical Information

  • To participate in our EOM's you must be at between 18 and 35 years old.

  • You have to be a member of Silba.

  • You don’t need previous experience in monitoring elections.

  • Before the EOM starts, you have to pass the OSCE E-Learning course for "Short Term Election Observers".

  • It is a requirement that you, in some way or another, inform about the EOM when you get back home.

  • The price for an EOM is normally a 250 euro participant fee which covers insurance, accomodation, food, expenses for the program and local transportation in the country. In addition you pay for your own plane ticket. We stress that all of our activities are non-profit, which means all of the money will go only to cover the costs you as a participant represent.

Frequently asked question about EOMs

Where can I find the upcoming election observation missions that Silba organises?

  • Follow us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn to stay updated on the upcoming missions we are organising. We also post the missions and projects we are engaged in on our website.

What does the application process contain?

  • If you apply for one of our missions (both as coordinator or participant), we ask you to write a short motivation letter and upload your CV. You can apply for multiple positions if you want and you will hear from us shortly after the application deadline. If you receive an e-mail of acceptance, we ask you to take the OSCE course for election observers.

What is the difference between coordinators and applicants?

  • Coordinators are the ones that organize the EOM for our participants. Normally the coordinators are 3-5 people, depending the country of the EOM. Participants are the ones who join our program, attend the lectures and information meetings, and observe during election day. Afterwards, participants share their EOM experiences in whatever way they see fit (for example, by writing an article about it in a student magazine or make a short video) to promote the work of Silba and what they have experienced during the EOM.

Can I apply for Silba's missions if I don’t live in Denmark?

  • A lot of the time, yes! Residency requirements will always be posted as part of the call if they apply.
